WE ARE BRIGHT! COLOR WORKSHOP FOR BLACK GIRLS

LAB DESCRIPTION:

In this Love & Learning, Black girls will have an opportunity to create or recreate joy through canvas painting. They will be encouraged to paint with COLOR and intentionality. With strokes of their brightly dipped brushes, Black girls will learn what it’s like to honor, foster and celebrate their bright Black girl individuality as well as their collective experiences.

Leaving behind all the societal norms that tell us to conform, and all of the norms that tell Black girls to put everyone else’s joy, stories, and experiences before our very own, in the WE ARE BRIGHT! Color Workshop, we will paint us. Center us. And celebrate us. In bright colors.

Deadline to Enroll: Thursday, March 31, 2022

LAB INSTRUCTOR:

Serena Saunders is a Philadelphia based Artist. Though her concentration is in portraiture, she also has meaningful work in the fields of sculpture and writing. Her work as a painter has a fresh, color-strong perspective that speaks to our human condition, most notably the condition of our society's youth, women, and communities. Her often large-scale, graphically bold and poetically composed paintings offer the viewer layers of narrative, almost as if the poet and the painter in her are collaborating to tell the story. With a color palette that gives her intricate prints a world of their own, Serena works to intrigue the imagination while not only documenting the truth but also speaking to what’s possible.
