POP! FOR BLACK GIRLS
(POWER, OPPRESSION & PRIVILEGE)
LAB DESCRIPTION:
Yes, we are all Black girls. But within that identity, are such different experiences. Some of us are Black American. Some of us are Black & Caribbean. Some of us are Black and Latinx. Some of us are straight. Some of us are queer. Some of us are parents. Some of us are not. Some of us are caregivers to our own parents and siblings. Some of us go to public school. Some of us go to private school. Some of us speak multiple languages. Some of us don't. All of those differences & similarities create a spectrum of experiences for us as Black girls. And while we get to define ourselves for ourselves, we can't pretend like there aren't bigger and larger structures out there that have an impact on what it means to be a Black girl in 2022.
POP! (Power, Oppression & Privilege) for Black Girls is a deeply reflective space where we will take a deep dive by looking at our identities and their connection to society at-large. In this Lab, we will have mind-blowing discussions and activities about our experiences in relationship to larger systems such as social class, nationality, ability, race, gender, sexuality, and religion. Thing is, there will only be Black girls in the space. This Lab seeks to deepen our understanding of the ways individual identities are deeply intersectional and are never outside of systematic contexts -- contexts that both oppress and grant privilege that oppresses others. This allows us to take these examinations beyond the classroom and apply what is learned in the Lab to real-world, non-academic situations in order to affect genuine change; how to create more critical thought and, in turn, increase the number of fierce and empowered Black girls.
