JOY FOR HER BELLY
(COOKING LAB)
SUMMER CAMP LAB DESCRIPTION:
This Summer, we are excited to be able to offer Black girls in middle school (and those heading to 9th grade in the Fall) an opportunity to learn both sweet treats AND dynamic eats! This hands-on Summer Lab, Joy for Her Belly, is designed to teach young girls some amazing recipes as well as their rhythmic, geographical, and natural origin. During these 90 minute sessions, campers and Chef Essence will virtually prepare healthy recipes alongside one another, as we embrace our Black soul ties to food.
Must be enrolled in camp to participate.
camp INSTRUCTOR:
Essence White is the creator and head chef of Essential Eats. She was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, where she grew up surrounded by her grandmother and mother who created dishes that were inspired from the soul, daily. That experience spiked a burning desire in her to continue that passion. Essence has been rooted in the kitchen since, and over the years has expanded her talents and cuisines through continuous hours of self-teaching and extensive research. After graduating from Smith College as an engineer, Essence has been able to fully optimize her creativity. Trained by multi-star Michelin Chef Peter Capraro, she has since taken the leap to transition to Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the U.S., and one of the most diverse cities in the world. Although she now calls Houston home, Essence has traveled across the world training and perfecting her craft. From Italy to France, South Africa, Peru, Spain, East Africa, Germany, China, Portugal, and Cuba, just to name a few, she credits these learning experiences as the foundation on which she’s built Essential Eats.
