LAYLA RYANS, 16

My name is Layla Ryans. I live in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, I am 16 years old, and I like to blast music and have mini concerts in my bedroom. Not to mention, I love to play the violin and the guitar. In spite of having an energetic demeanor in my room, I am very secluded in large spaces. However, I still try to make an effort to interact with others. A great example would be this organization. At the age of 10, my mother signed me up for the Summit and I was extremely hesitant to go. Once I finished the Summit, I made so many memories and friends that I was deeply devastated to leave. Having the opportunity to get out of my comfort zone has helped pave the way to becoming more social. That’s why it is so important to have these spaces for Black girls. It creates a comforting atmosphere for us to socialize and learn about how worthy and beautiful we are. That to me is the true definition of “For The Love of Black Girls.”

If I could change one stereotype about Black girls it would be that we are hateful. We are not the “angry Black women” that society perceives us to be. We are resilient, unapologetic, and powerful.
